 bore diameters

Hi. I always wondered about when companies give the measurements of their clarinets bores. Are these measurement diameters, lengths? What would it mean if a Buffet R13 had a .574 bore? Where in the bore is this measurement taken? Thanks!

Unless I am mistaken, I believe the bore refers to the inside diameter taken at the bottom end of the upper (left hand) joint. You will sometimes see them in inches . . . sometimes in millimeters (25.4mm = 1 in.)

Fred is correct.
You measure bores with a tool that looks like a steel finger.

I think that clarinets with larger bores tend to have more flexible tone (which is good for some things and bad for others.)

Well said, both Fred and Jim, I agree. We have talked a lot about clarinet bores, so go to "Search the Phorum" and read what already has been said, and join the Chat session today at 3 PM Central {Dee's and my time zone} and ask further if you wish. Don
