GBK,
I heard this story on PBS today and it took me back to Music Thoery class at good old Ohio University almost 50 year ago. Sally Koman would be so proud that I can still spell appoggiatura (and know what it means) as well as all those other cool words we learned in Theory I.
HRL
PS The scary part was I was just in Athens, OH earlier this week and walked those same halls once again after a very, very long time. Many fond memories and no ghosts to speak of!

The media refers to the appoggiatura as a "melodic tone". It's a failure of music education that they can't define it more succinctly.

Leonard,
There are several non-harmonic tones that are often found in chordal progressions such as passing tones, neighboring tones, suspensions, escape tones, anticipations, as well as others. An appoggiatura is another one and is a non-harmoinic tone that tends to leap away from the chordal note and then resolves itself to something harmonic that follows.
Check any basic music theory book for examples. A picture explains this better.
HRL
PS Yes, my first music theory class with Sally Koman, a recent Eastman grad, was at Ohio U. in the fall of 1956 when I was 18. I'm pushing 67; GBK is just a kid in comparison.

Don't let Hank's age fool you - he is as sharp as a tack.

Leonard - Hank's explanation is excellent. This might help you visualize how an appoggiatura works...GBK
