 Hite/Baermann vs Bettoney/Baermann (books 4 and 5)
Author: VCMM

Hi. I posted this on Klarinet but got no replies. Just posting it here to see if I might have better luck.

I was wondering if Hite's Artistic Studies Book 2 (Baermann books 4 and 5) is the preferred way to acquire these studies, or if the Bettoney versions on Carl Fischer are better? I understand Baermann 4 is incomplete in Hite, but it would be less expensive than purchasing both Bettoney/Baermann books (books 4 and 5 are separate). On the other hand, I am not sure my skill level is even at Baermann 5 yet, so perhaps I should just get Bettoney/Baermann 4?

Thanks in advance,
Victor

John hit it on the head.

Hite's version is also better on the eyes. The other thing you can do is to purchase the Music Minus One version of them.

John Cipolla recorded them. (you get to hear the Clarinet too)

The Bettoney/Baermann (Carl Fischer) edition is still reprinting the same original plates from 1938/1939 and it shows. There are a number of smudged notes, half inked notes, and extraneous ink marks throughout.

The books are also cluttered with many superfluous, old fashioned articulation symbols, and fingering notations which refer to the old Otto Fritzsche fingering chart.

Hite's edition is much cleaner and easier to read. He also suggests a number of very useful fingering ideas to help with the difficult passages...GBK

I had fun in a music store today comparing Hite's re-edition of the Rose 40 studies compared to his Artistic Studies Book 1 Version of it.

The new version (rose 40 only) looks very good, but for the $15 that both cost, I'd still say to get the Artistic Studies as you get several books for that same $15 cost.

David... How is Hite re-edition of the Rose 40 different than his first edtion (Artistic Studies) of the Rose 40?

More dynamics? Expressive terms? Articulation differences? etc...

Can I assume you didn't think the re-edition was worth buying over his older edition?

Thanks...GBK

I didn't buy the book - just looked at it briefly. Cost for both were $12.50 (not $15) and I was already getting the Artistic Studies #1 for a student.

With a very casual glance, I noticed that the terms had changed for several of the studies - he wasn't using the same terms such as dolcissimmo for #2 (I don't remember what he used, but it wasn't the same term).

Also the breath marks were very much changed. He took several out and made for longer phrases (without a breathing break). The credits of the book had several major players listed for contributing to it including Larry Combs and Charlie Neidich.

Hmm, maybe I will pick up a copy just to have to compare more closely.
