Ok, I am not sure of the exact terminology, but the tube that goes into the clarinet right under the register key has come loose. I was pulling my swab through and all of a sudden the tube came out but only as far as my key would allow it. I am wondering if I should have someone repair this...I have never heard of this happening before and I don't know if it really has that much affect if it is not glued in place. Thanks for any input.

If the thumb tube leaks it can cause performance problems. Depending on your clarinet, some are threaded in and others are just press fit. If you can determine that it is just a press fit, take the key off (f key) and push it (thumb tube) back down. Look inside the bore of the instrument and make sure that the chamfered part is aligned with the bore of the instrument. You're okay if it doesn't leak, and you'll know it if it does! Take it to a repair tech and have them fit it if you experience any difficulties.

I agree with J B's comments, but, is the tube you refer to actually the register tube or the "F hole" short, larger tube? Needless to say, they both must be tight and non-leaking or the cl at times will "jump" to the clarion without use of the register key. I would suggest taking it to a competent repair-person. Luck, Don

Marci -
Don and J. are right. You need to get this fixed right away. If you got the instrument from a music store recently, or bought it new within the last year, the repair should be free.
While you're at the shop, get a Gigliotti swab. It's made of silk, so it doesn't bunch up or catch on the register tube. Also, it has a ribbon at the bottom end, so if it does snag, you can pull it out backward.
Best regards.

Marci,
Sorry, I didn't read carefully. If it is your register tube that popped up, take the key off and push it back down. If it doesn't leak you're okay. All of these are just press fit. (the only exception I can think of is the Selmers that have a large screw in type). If there is a leak you'll know it right away!

If any of the tubes gets loose or pushes out, they must be sealed in place, usually with shellac. It is also possible that if your swab caught around the register tube & you forced it, that it may be bent, this can cause some tuning problems. Bring you clarinet to a qualified tecnician and let him/her check it out.

The good news is that this is a simple problem for a technician to fix, and the work shouldn't cost very much.
