The Difference Between a Selmer Omega USA and Paris
Author: ashadazle

I hear that Paris Selmer Omegas are better than USA Selmer Omegas. How? I'm an intermediate player so would it really matter for me? How can I tell the difference between a USA and a Paris? Is a USA not even worth buying for only $300? Does the engraving on the bottom have anything to do with anything? Somebody please let me know. I am about to make a deal with someone on this instrument. STOP ME IF IM MAKING A MISTAKE. Thanks

The word "Selmer" is a fairly loose term.

2 Companies which are completely different yet contractually obligated. Think of the usa division as student targeted and the paris one as professionally targeted.

Selmer USA made the Bundy's

while

Selmer Paris made the Mark IV Saxes

If the clarinet is in great shape with all good pads etc., then $300 for the clarinet might not be a bad deal. I believe the Omega was the replacement for the Signet Soloist, which for years had been the flagship of the Selmer USA line. It was a significant step better than other Signets, so you're probably OK with the Omega unless it needs work.

Is there such a thing as a "Paris Selmer Omega"? I had thought the Omega name was only applied to US-made instruments.

I think you will find that Selmer Paris instruments include the word Paris, and also say "Made in France".

If there are so many people on this board unwilling or unable to have a civil and balanced discussion about important issues, then I shan't bother to post here any more.

To the great relief of many of you, no doubt.

The US Mark VI instruments were shipped as raw and were finished in the states. The tone holes were pulled in Paris and left in a rough state. Lou Artley and sons did the tone hole work on the original MK VI. The bells were hammered to shape, thinkness and temper. The key work was fitted and then two coats of clear lacquer were sprayed. Next the engraving was done by Kenny Doty and Bob Louser. A third coat of clear lacquer was applied after the engraving. The saxes were paded and with the keys closed then Selmer gold lacquer was applied followed by another clear coat. This information comes via Ralph Morgan/Rich Feldman.

I think my Selmer Omega USA is an excellent cl, ser # 449x and it has several changes-improvements over the top models of the earlier US Selmer "intermediate" cls. The upper joint is slightly conical-poly cylindrical, the left hand E/B and F#/C# long keys have a flatter touch-piece, both of which I like. I have found [so far] that I prefer and older [CT] barrel for very good response and 12ths tuning. The emBELLishment and Omega symbol with a glass mp attracts favorable comment. It may be that the joints are bored in France, and the keying done here?? An unappreciated bargain? Any Paris Omegas on I've seen on EBAY were higher priced ! The use of the Greek letter/word Omega must be intended to indicate high quality . Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

Don't forget Selmer Centered Tone-Omega model, which was introduced in 1950s. They had two models: one with a double register vent and the other looked like a regular 'CT' but had a fancy engraving on the bell and Lower-Joint.

I have one of these in my collection you can check pics below:

TKS, Vytas, nice pics, I hadn't seen one of these jewels for quite a while. My USA has a differing, less-deep? and less extensive carvings, and a differing lower post tie-down, and no H Selmer logo on the bell. I prob. need a Paris model badly, but just put up with a GREAT CT, and play bass and alto almost exclusively !! Regards, Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

Thanks for all the replies. I wasn't shopping on ebay actually. I was buying from this rich kid at school whose parents wanted him to play ever so dearly. They bought him a new clarinet every school year. Little did they know he quit band. Though I desperately need a new step up I won't buy it, because whatever I do buy will be my clarinet for a few years and I want it to be a GREAT one. I guess I'll just have to be patient and see what else I can find. Maybe I will actually look on ebay.

Ironically, one ended on ebay right when we were discussing it.
