My wind ensemble is playing tersichore by Bob M., and in the Eb part there is a smear from alt. F to alt. A. Any ideas?

You do what's necessary.
First, play the F , slide your left ring finger off the hole and add the sliver key and side keys and then the throat Ab and A keys.
If that doesn't work, slide all your fingers off (including the thumb) and add side keys and throat keys, one at a time.
Alternatively, play the A and put down enough fingers to get down to F and slide up from there. It should also be possible to bend the A down to F. Practice bending the clarion upper C down, using your lip and oral cavity, and then do it on the A.
Let us know what works.

GO TERPS!
(I was Terpsichore for a thing once. The muse of choral music and dance)
That didn't help. Sorry.
