Does anyone know which model the R series Selmers came in? Could it possibly be a Centered tone or a series 9. My cousin who lives in Utah said that he has a Selmer/ Elkhart with a picture of Manhatten on the logo. The serial number R 4031 and he asked me to find out any info. I searched the archives and can't seem to find anything. I would really appreciate any help.

The P series etc are the good Centered Tone cls, I'd guess that the R's might be one of the 10s, S or G. A good friend has just inherited a 10G[igliotti], its on the horn's U J logo, I'll report his ser # before long. Others, please help. Don

Interesting clarinet . . . An R series Selmer Paris instrument would date to around 1958-1959, but I don't know of a Manhattan in that era. However, a Selmer USA (Elkhart?) would not share the same serial numbering, and I wouldn't know how to go about dating it. Selmer did use the model "Manhattan" in the 1920's on both saxophones and metal clarinets that I know of. The saxophones were actually made by Martin rather than Selmer. Try to see if the appearance of the clarinet is consistent with a 1920's vintage rather than a late 50's. Those are really the only two possibilities that I can come up with.

Just a couple of more thoughts on this one. You mentioned that a picture of Manhattan was on the logo - which logo (upper joint, barrel, lower joint, bell)? If the picture wasn't on either the upper or lower joint, the part bearing the picture might not be original to the body joints.

I believe the Series 9 selmers were in the S serial numbers in 1960-62. I had one and it did not have manhattan in the logo.

Based on serial numbers I have seen on e-Bay, the Series 9 basically begins with R serial numbers, even though I did see one Seires 9 with a Q serial number. LIke other models that they make, I believe that there is overlap with the Centered Tone series, which ends with the R serial numbers.
