 Cornet/Trumpet vs clarinet embouchure?
Author: Aussiegirl

Im currently in my first year of uni majoring in clarinet, and when i go home i fiddle around a bit with my brother's trumpet and can get a reasonable sound out of it and get up to C above middle C fairly comfortably with a warm up, which im told is not bad considering im very much a beginner at it. The brass band near where im going to uni is desperate for cornets, and apparently the music isnt hugely difficult, the 3rs cornet parts not going to much out of my range. If i was to be playing cornet on a regular basis, would it screw up my clarinet embouchure? Im really keen to do this as a challenge and to meet more people, but if it was going to undo all my work on clarinet it wouldnt be worth it. Thankyou!

Fiona

This has been discussed MANY times before.

Here are three threads to read:

Playing the trumpet (or any other instrument) will not harm your embouchure, but might actually help strengthen it. Maintaining your clarinet practice schedule is the "key". Read the threads.................

I can second that. My son started learning trumpet and I taught myself how to play it. Getting 1 octave out of it is easy, but then it gets more difficult and needs a bit of work.

It does NOT harm your clarinet embouchure in any way. Quite the opposite.

I'd also like to agree about your embouchure getting better. I had a limited success in playing trumpet during my two semesters of brass methods in school. It was very encouraging to see that my clarinet embouchure actually improved after playing a little trumpet for half an hour. I found that the oral cavity behind the teeth on down to the throat actually increased in its ability to "relax" and keep a stable position, making my tuning through all registers easier to "fix" ;-). This was a problem my professor and I were dealing with as due to the nature of my barrel length/taper I would squeeze up notes. My tone invariably improved as well.

IMO, give trumpet a go, you just might enjoy it, and since you already read the notes, learning a "new clef" isn't an issue! Also, if I'm correct in you saying "uni majoring", you are an experienced clarinet player - it's going to be much easier for you to switch back to a clarinet embouchure than it would for a beginning player.

My Best,
Joe

thanks guys! Its weird, i also posted this on a trumpet forum and they were much more "Dont try to be a jack-of-all-trades and a master of none". But theres no way im letting my clarinet slide, ive gotten too far with it to ditch it now, cornet would be another second instrument that would be a challenge, and id get to meet new ppl in this band, as i dont know a huge amount of ppl in melbourne yet! Plus if/when i go into teaching it should be handy to have some brass under my belt. Thanks! will keep you posted on how it goes!
