 Appreciation Expressed

I'm not sure how many of the younger people realize who Mr. Pay is, so I wanted to point out his presence to them.

While we have distinguished players here, Anthony Pay's presence is something of a special treat for us. Mr. Pay is one of those extraordinaires that we listen to on recordings all our life, adore his playing and may never quite notice the magnitude of his contributions to our instrument and where he sits among the "clarinet gods". ;)

I, among many I am sure, am extremely pleased to see that he has taken the time to visit us here...and am appreciative. Thanks for visiting with us Tony!

For those who are not familiar with Mr. Pay I would strongly encourage your taking this simple search:

http://www.google.com/search?q=%22Anthony+Pay%22+clarinet&btnG=Search+the+Web

I mean, it only returns some 2020 pages refering to him from the search "Anthony Pay" and clarinet while "Tony Pay" and clarinet returns a mere 2670. [Ah! Kevin Zhang, below, pointed out the correct spelling that I overlooked. We should add the 840 for Antony Pay which, I believe, takes him over the "Stanley Drucker" search return!] [right]

I guess that's slightly better than:

~ 692 returned for Larry Combs
~ 1350 for Anthony Gigliotti
~ 614 for Paul Meyer
~ 3710 for Sabine Meyer
~ 1550 for Colin Bradbury <-- Heh. ;)
~ 954 for David Shifrin
~ 3900 for Harold Wright

(A search for occurrences of Jonathan Cohler did return 2920, but I'd guess Mr. Cohler was responsible for two-thirds of those himself [right]).

A good number of the people you may very well look up to for clarinet have studied with Mr. Pay...or wanted to.

Thanks again, Tony, for visiting us and I hope your stay and participation is long.

But "Antony Pay" only returned 840. Most of the hit results for "Anthony Pay" are from CD reviewers, unofficial documents, etc while those for "Antony Pay" are from press releases and official listings.

Regardless of his first name, he certainly holds the definative rendition (with Iona Brown/St.Martin-in-the-Fields) of the Mozart clarinet quintet, at least in my minds. Unquestionably a world class performer, and a believer in authenticity (period instruments) to boot.

But Acker Bilk returns 6420 [wink]

and Kenny G returns 4,580,000 [wink][wink]

However, it IS nice to see Tony contributing his vast expertise to the bulletin board...GBK

In this one case I'll correct the spelling because Tony corrected me once. Antony. Tony is easier to remember.

I don't know about a clarinet "god", but he and his wife are damn fine company across a dinner table :)

We certainly need more experienced and talented persons populating the BB in place of hacks like me, and Mr. Pay is one of my idols so it is indeed a privilege and pleasure to get his advice from time to time.

Well I never...! [hot]

GBK humored, "But Acker Bilk returns 6420 [...] and Kenny G returns 4,580,000".

Hmmm..."Google" returns some 369,000,000 on a...er...Google search. [huh]

Good thing Tony isn't being compared with the "Google" gods. [cool]
