 Researching Jean Tonet Clarinet
Author: fulkerson

I have happened upon a rosewood clarinet marked "Jean Tonet Paris." Does anyone have any knowledge of this instrument. It sounds wonderful and is very well made. I just wish I knew more about the brand. Can anyone help?

Mark C may be able to help from his "Langwill", others [Dave S] also. I have a Jean Martin Bb , made by Martin Freres[brothers] , Paris, a good player for an older wood, "stencil" cl, and have seen a number of Jean on others of that vintage 1940-60. Many were made for importation into the US. My guess, Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

So your guess is that it is made by Martin Freres? Have they been bought out? I'm trying to get an estimate of it's value as well as its reputation.

Bad idea to make any guesses ... Jean is a very, very common part of the name and signifies nothing.

I'll check the Langwill after work. The probable value will be low; if it was a sought-after clarinet, most of us would know about it already. Even excellent playing clarinets command a very low price if it isn't one of the well-known brands.

Thanks folks...I appreciate you checking. I'm not particularly worried about a high return (I paid a very low price for it and did a lot of work to it myself.) It plays very nicely now and I'm just doing my homework on the brand.
