I'm working on the Penderecki Prelude, amongst other things, at the moment. I'm really enjoying it, but I have a problem with it, and I hope someone here who has played the piece will be able to help me.
On the second page the music goes up to the topmost C, and after pausing on that note it then falls back to a high F. I can get up to the top C OK, but then I can never go back to the F properly - some harmonic seems to come out instead, almost as if the clarinet wants to stay on the very highest notes!
I've tried all sorts of things - thinking of the correct pitch for the F, adjusting embouchure, NOT adjusting embouchure, keeping airflow constant, changing airflow etc etc - and nothing seems to work! I'm going to a clarinet summer school in July and will be able to get advice there, but I'd really like to get the problem sorted before then if possible..........

For the C: LH - thumb, register and A key plus first finger
RH - first finger, and top one nearest to the finger-holes of the
stack-of-four
For the F: LH - thumb, register, fingers 2 and 3 plus C# key
RH - same stack-of-four one as for the C
I should be trying out some alternatives for the F, shouldn't I? If you have some good suggestions, I'll try them out tomorrow (it's a bit late for high-note practice here now!)

Try this for F:
Long F
xxx l xxx add the F/C key and also the C#/G# key (and register key!). This fingering works great for doing F octaves.
Is there any way that you can be fingering an F while you play the C? Do this be changing vowel shape or something in your mouth and maybe also aristream. I know I can finger 4th octave G but play a G minor triad while keeping those fingers down. A little bit to mess with. By the way, you might have to get both a different C and F. Good luck!

Upper Altissimo:

There's lots of fingerings to tide you over! You can surely find at least 1 combination that will work for you! Good luck!

Thanks very much for the advice - the 'long' F certainly seems to make it easier, although I haven't quite solved the problem yet. I'll keep on experimenting!
