 Am I just too good?
Author: contragirl

I was thinking about maybe getting a crappy old Bundy bass clarinet or something just to have a bass until I can afford a low C pro horn. Or until I join the National Guard. Cuz in the time between now and whenever I get a good bass, I might be gigging.

Am I just too good to get a plastic crap horn? Is it worth my time?

Hell no. The crappy bass is too good for you ...

C'mon, contragirl, you know better than this ... we don't know how good you are, so how could anyone honestly answer the question? And in any case, a Bundy in good condition might even be better than some expensive horn. When you can play it as well as J. Lawrie Bloom could play it then it's time to get a new one.

My personal opinion is that if you need and want a horn (or anything for that matter) you get what you can afford, learn to work with it and "upgrade" as you are able.

But I agree with Mark - from your other posts, you seem too smart to pose this question.

I 'know' from previous posts that you're good, Contragirl, and I can't speak for you but, my ol' Bundy bass has been tootin' right along for a good two years with practically no maintenance issues at all. And it sounds just like the other bass clarinets we've met. Other folks' mileage may vary, of course.

The term "crappy" strikes me as quite subjective here... I mean, not *all* old Bundys are crappy old Bundys :)

Contragirl - here are a few scenario's for you:

I got into All State WE my Sophmore year in HS on a plastic Bundy clarinet...beating many of the rich kids with fancy R-13's.

I played on Harold Wrights A clarinet once...I didn't sound a damn thing like him...but it was a beautiful horn.

I just bought an old Bundy effer...and I sound better on that than I did on my schools beat up Buffet Eb with the wobbly joints. When I have more cash...and a real reason to get a nice Effer, I'll shell out.

As long as a horn seals, with no tecnical defects...you should be fine.

Listen to Unka Dave - he's on the right track with stencils, and hidden gems...

Heh. I was just thinking of how I would go out and get a professional gig playing a Bundy, then be laughed at by all the other cool musicians.

I guess when I said "crappy Bundy" I was also looking at the defunct Bundys that were selling on ebay when I was typing. So those were, in fact, the crappy Bundys I was talking about. Then again, an old Bundy would be crappy in comparison to the 37 I've been playing the past 4 yrs. :(

I'm just worried that my sound would suffer if I played a plastic horn. You think I could rock that thing like I do the low C?

And to be modest, I'm not really a great bass clarinetist... I get by. :-P lol

hehe, thanks for the input.
