 Penderecki and Piston
Author: clarinet713

Hello all,

I am looking for recordings of the 3 miniatures for clarinet and piano by Penderecki as well as the Piston clarinet concerto. I looked on Amazon and found a recording of each but was wondering if there was anything else out there.

Thanks!!

There is a Piston recording of Harold Wright on one of his live recital CD's. It may be out of print...and I recall the recording is not the best (Turns out he didn't care for the piece very much). I'll check my file and get back to you.

AFAIK there have been three recordings of the Piston, one by John Russo on CRS (personally I avoid his recordings), the abovementioned recording by Harold Wright, and a recording by Paul Dean. The Dean would be my choice, particularly since the CD also includes a recording of the Veale clarinet concerto. The Dean recording is on the (Australian) ABC label. You can order it here:

(The only Piston I can find at Amazon is John Russo and it's listed as currently unavailable.")

As far as the Penderecki is concerned, Sharon Kam did a recording on Teldec which includes Penderecki's Preludes and Clarinet Concerto and Lutoslawski's Dance Preludes. Appears to be out-of-print, though. Stevensson has recorded them for BIS. This, as well as the Wergo at Amazon are available at:

The Piston Concerto recording by H. Wright is available used on amazon.com.

Also, Naxos has a nice recording with a lot of chamber pieces for clarinet by Penderecki (are you sure Kam recorded a clarinet concerto? To my knowledge, Penderecki didn't write a clarinet concerto - I could be wrong though). Here is the naxos link:

Penderecki either wrote no clarinet concerti or two depending on your point of view. According to the liner notes accompanying the recording, he has arranged both his viola concerto and his flute concerto for clarinet. The concerto on the Kam recording is his arrangement of his flute concerto. Again, according to the liner notes, the clarinet version was commissioned by the Czech Philharmonic and received its world premier in 1996 with Kam as the clarinet soloist and Penderecki conducting.

I second getting the Paul Dean recording. It has a number of other fantastic pieces on there (including the orchestral version of the Lutoslawski Dance Preludes) and the playing is absolutely first rate.
