Dear friends:
The catalog lists two pieces by Reinecker with the same opus number: Op274. The version for viola is in A Major. The piece for horn is in Bb Major. Some of the web commentaries describe these pieces are "companion".
Question 1: Are they the same piece just in a different key to adapt to either horn or viola?
Question 2: If they are, which version is the original? The viola or the horn?
Question 3: If you buy the Musica Rara edition (number 2080), do you get the two version as implied by the catalog listing, or do you need to buy the two versions.
Question 4: Besides Jenner, which other original pieces for the clarinet, piano, horn combination would you recommend.
I recently met a fantastic horn player who is as crazy as me about chamber music. We are doing the Jenner already. We are looking at enough work to put a little recital together. We need a 3rd piece. The rest of the program can be filled with duo music for piano and something, one piano solo, etc. We would like to find an exciting 20th century piece that is bound to be a crowd please as closing act. With Jenner and Reinecke, we have enough late romantic stuff for one program. Any suggestions?
Many thanks in advance.

Wow,
Another piece for clarinet, piano and viola!!
I've been working with a violist and pianist to perform Mozart's KV498 Trio in Eb.
During the search for a violist, I transposed the viola part for English Horn (or Horn) in F--leaving the clarinet in Bb. Have not tried the altered arrangement. We all think that the voicing for the original combination is wonderful --although the violist does not think that her part is typical viola music.

The two pieces are different works, one for clarinet, horn and piano and the other for clarinet viola and piano; both are attractive.

...I should have clarified the question of the opus numbers: the trio in A major with the viola is Op 264; that in Bb major with the horn is Op 274.

there's a Lachner trio for horn, clarinet and piano - it's as good as Lachner gets.
also a trio by Heidenreich - includes an Estoniense movement - a kind of estonian mazurka waltz polka...

Thank you all.
We have decided to go with the Alec Wilder's piece. According to the web, it is a bit easier than the others (Jenner and Reinecker), with a jazzy feel. Probably the best way to end our little recital.
I also discovered on the web (specifically, on a site dedicated to horn players) that some group play the Bruch 8 pieces with a horn instead of a viola. That would be quite interesting indeed.

The Wilder is a fun piece, I've done it myself. Some others to keep in mind for the future include the George Rochberg Trio and also the Gunther Schuller Romantic Sonata- haven't done that one, but the Rochberg is a decent piece. Have fun!
