I got a Buffet Bb Clarinet from my teacher Joe Allard in the mid 1960's new. Joe had someone who was selling them and he tried them out with me till one was just right...I still have it and use it today and it is in very good condition...it has a number of 99983...Joe said something that it was a last one of its kind made...something about the kind of wood...toooooo many years....is there any way to know if this is a special clarinet....also what year do you think it was made?

Do I love Buffet pro clarinets from the 1960s...especially R13s from then. Fairly good intonation and tonal colour to die for.
Search posts on this Board ref: Marcellus and early R13s, and separately, postings regarding the model D1, also a lovely clarinet, probably a non polycylindrical pro model with a more pronounced flare. The only one I tried had intonation problems though.

These instruments are something special. I have a Bb (97xxx) and A (98xxx). I've collected and played many different instruments since 1991. These are the two that will stay with me.
(Plus my battered 1950's Marigaux.)
(And I can't leave behind the 25xxx Buffet.)
(And, frankly, for that matter, my N series Selmer plays as well, if less obviously "artistically," as any of them - YOU have to put the soul into it - I like that! - on the Buffet, the soul comes as standard equipment.)

Back then, (1968 or so) when I get this clarinet, I do not recall anyone referring to it as the R13...They just called it a Buffet the KING of the clarinets and it cost me about $1000.00 then...It does not have any extra keys, it is just a normal clarinet with a rich, warm, lush tone I love!!! I would guess this was some clarinet back then...there is nothing else I can say about this clarinet.
An interesting story about it...Once I audition for a community band in 1980 and the person hearing me play asked me if I studied with Joe Allard...Now this person never met me and it was in Omaha, Ne. some 20 years after I sudied with Joe...He said my tone and style sounded like Joe...this really blew me away....must have been this clarinet and the Dave Hite mouthpiece Joe got me the same year.
I do not do much playing any more in the Omaha Ne area as there are very few places to play...as a music teacher K-5 and a 5th grade band man I do not have very much time except to play for myself for fun...
I was really interested in learning more about the history now that Joe is gone..

Sorry, I was quite wrong - reported views on early R13s were by Moennig, not Marcellus!
Still just as interesting though for a view on just how wonderful sub 125,000 Buffets were.

Notwithstanding the variation that exists between instuments, my own experience of Buffet R13s is that around 80XXX the tonal character is just incredible (fabulous range of colour and resonance) and intonation is decent. By 120XXX the keywork is slightly less impressive, the tone is still lovely, possibly a shade less weighty, and the intonation is still decent.
Like you, I love my 76XXX R13 above all others.
