The Clarinet BBoard

Well after getting hold of one of these beauties for my R13 I now realise how much better my clarinet could be. It makes SUCH a difference to the throat Bflat, it now matches the throat A pretty well.
But even better is the second register, it all plays more free and there is no hissing or buzzing on Bnatural. Crossing registers is so much smoother, it makes me wonder why they don't use this type of vent on all clarinets.
Yes it may be long and ugly but it has made such an improvement(more so than a new barrel or even a mouthpiece ever could).
All people with an R13 really do owe it to themselves to get one of these!

Dear Dezza,
My R13's throat Bb is so sharp that I can't lip it down into tune.
Does the Galper vent fix that?
thanks

I found this link from a search on Google about the Galper Vent.
http://members.aol.com/cwindz/galper.html
David Blumberg - do you still use a clarinet with this vent?
It states on the page that it fits Buffets. All Buffets or only recent Buffets? I'm pretty sure that they've played with vent placement every so slightly over the years and I have a '62 R13.

After Abe passed away, the vent became very, very hard to get.
Well, impossible right now actually.
I'm assuming that you got your's on Ebay last month? (there was one there).
Yes, they were really good. I personally don't use one as my set of Prestige's don't have that problem at all. But several students of mine do and like them a lot.
Bob - do you put your right hand down at all when playing the Bb? (resonance fingering - use 2nd 2 fingers of the top hand ((index and ring finger) as well as those same fingers for the bottom hand with the addition of the low F key).
It would fit on a 60's buffet no problem.

Sorry to hear about Abe. Sounds like another loss to the clarinet community in many ways.
David - Thanks for the response.

Well it makes my Bflat the same as the trill side, intonation is great.
It is a real shame that these are not available now as it is such a good product, maybe somebody else could take over the making and marketing of this fine product!
I think the real trick to the vent is the part that protudes from the outside has a bigger diameter bore than the part of the vent that sits inside the clarinet.

I am not sure of the reasons for the improvement in crossing the bridge and in the Bb, but I also think that all the above praise is true. What a shame that Abe did not have "eternal youth". He was a real gentleman with a strong generosity streak - after my purchase of his vent I received several shipments of music arranged for the clarinet by himself. I am still "growing into" these, but soon I may get there.
Karel.

A G's patent on the above, [using "speaker" for 'register'] is US 5,241,890 issued in 1993, filed1991, am not sure from which date the patent's life began . His only other pat I have found, via several searches, is 5,033,350, 1991/1990 on a mouthpiece "improvement". Being a Canadian, he PROB. filed first in CA, and may have also filed in ?Europe? . Perhaps some of our BBoarders, as his personal friends, have some knowledge of other pats and any licensing activities re: 5,241,890, as a possible source of "his register vent improvement" 's continued manufacture. I have heard that they were/are? intended for Buffets only, I have both Selmers and Leblancs with differing vent/tube designs which give improved Bb quality. To me , it would be desireable for ?someone? to obtain the "rights" for continuing this vent's manufacture. Will help more with "patent legalities" if asked {EMs}. Don
Thanx, Mark, Don

Glad that you immensely like the Galper key I sold you. I had no need for it and thought I would pass it on to someone who might have a use for it.
David....yes, that is the key sold last month on ebay.
toot toot

:) - I keep track of em, and yes, they are for Buffet's only due to the fit of the key, tube.

yes, I have covered all of the finger holes on my R13 while playing the pinch Bb, and it's still sharp.
Thanks for the suggestion

Good news for the Galper Tube/Key - I just spoke with Abe's son and we are going to bring it out again.
It will probably be a few weeks as more have to be made, but they most likely will be availiable once again!

My Abe story:
I wanted a teacher in my area. I knew that one of his former students was located nearby, but I did not have a contact number. So I emailed Abe for info.
Within a day he called my home (long distance from Canada).
Abe had an accent....my wife thought he was a telemarketer and handled the call accordinly (yet with some politeness.)
When I returned the call we chuckled over the mix-up, and Abe gave me the phone number of my present teacher. What a great guy Abe was.
FYI I understand his daughter did the little sketches that appear in some of his books. Another clarinetist helped him with his web site. Shortly before his death, Abe grew fond of Australian reeds. And....his publishing company is his name spelled backwards.

It was officially Avrahm; Abraham is a different spelling of the same name, and he went by the nickname 'Abe'.

Ahvram.....or Marvha, backwards (his publishing co.)
This is the Hebrew pronounciation of Abraham, hence Abe.
Just like Jacob is Yakov (as in Smirnoff) and Issac is Yitzhak.
Enough biblical stuff for one night.
He made his own cork grease from a special recipe. My teacher was given an endless supply in an old coffee can. (frankly I prefer Omars NASA stuff)

Here's my favorite Abe story:
Mouthpiece caps
If you have a metal ligature, you would have a metal cap.
If you have a leather ligature or whatever, the cap would be plastic or
whatever.
There was one day in our lives at the Toronto Symphony where a
non-metallic cap would have been handy.
This happened in a Mahler symphony. There was an inaudible pianissimo,
you could hear a "pin drop".
So- did a pin drop? NO--- it was the clarinet cap that belonged to
Jack Featherston, our section man.
Dropped on the floor.
Clink, clank, clink clank until it came to a stop.
What does one do when a thing like that happens at a crucial quiet
moment?
Jack nonchalantly picked it up and
HANDED IT TO ME.
Now that was real cool.
Avrahm Galper

the website says it works for r13's. does anyone know if it can be installed on a festival and with favorable results. ive heard that the register key placement is 2 milometers higher on the festivals, would this matter?

Unless the register key has been re-designed, no. Abe tried it on my son's festival 5 or 6 years back and it didn't fit correctly.
The Festival also has a different set of idiosyncrasies than an R13 (especially the 12ths, the reason the regiuster tube was moved); I'm not sure if it would be helpful or harmful.
