 Long B to high on YCL-221
Author: matthiAS

Hello,
I ordered a Yamaha bassclarinett YCL-221. I am a saxophoneplayer and have not played clarinett for 20 years. In my oppinion the YCL-221 is a good instrument for low budget. But the long B (all keys closed) is extremely high. I cannot get it in tune.

Is it a known problem of the YCL-221? I consider to send back the instrument.

[ Written B1 would be 8 leger lines below the treble clef staff. [wink]

If you are referring to the written B which is one leger line below the treble staff, it is (for convenience sake, on this bulletin board) called B3.

There is a reminder notation at the top of this page - GBK ]

I changed the topic. Hope you know what I mean now. Should be called B4?

The long B (written as middle-of-the-treble-staff B4), played with the register key, just above the throat tones, at the bottom of the clarion) is very sharp on my YCL-221, too. My teacher helped it some with some white plumber's tape around the handle of the bell's tone-hole cover. But too much makes for stuffiness in that beautiful, rich low (chalumeau) register.

My teacher has suggested that I get a repair person to close up that tone hole a little with some tape or fabric or something. I think I'll try this -- that sharp B is beginning to sound natural to me...

By the way, some other intonation problems on my horn went away when I pulled out the middle joint a little bit. And I discovered a neat trick: To keep the middle joint separated just the right amount, I bought and installed a rubber O-ring from the BOTTOM joint as a spacer on the middle joint. (The O-ring is Yamaha part number M9A12830.)

The YCL-221 is a very nice horn, and a great value for the money, in my book.

@Low_Reed
Is the B3 (left hand closed + right hand middle finger) on your YCL-221 to high as well and does it sound a bit stuffy?

The extremely sharp B is a common problem on the YCL-221, many have complained about it on the bass clarinet group on yahoo. Otherwise, however, the instrument is very good and IMHO the best student model by far. I find the stuffy B (left hand closed + right hand middle finger) on a lot of low-priced bases, so very unlikely that it's just you or the instrument.

MatthiAS,

I just warmed up my YCL-221, then worked on low-register intonation. My B3 is in tune, and not stuffy. (Once I got warmed up, that is. When I first got the horn out, it did sound a little stuffy -- but that might have been due to the power of suggestion!)

I have the same problem with a YCL-221 myself. I like the suggestions that I see from Low Reed and am going to try them myself.
