 Chadash Clarinets
Author: wjk

Interesting article in The Clarinet about Chadash clarinets. Has anyone tried one? They are expensive, but are there advantages (such as the aged wood)? Is there a waiting time to get one?
Thanks---

I've tried them and they are wonderful especially the A clarinet. I think if you have the money to buy a Tosca, you seriously owe it to yourself to try
the Chadash.

I've played several sets in Guy's studio and they are very good horns. I think his client list speaks for itself. And yes, there is a wait since he builds to order. If you are seriously contemplating it and want to compare a Chadash to a anything else, I'd recommend contacting Guy about putting you in touch with one of his clients to try the clarinet.

With the recent buy-outs in the music instrument industry and the apparent emphasis shifting toward profit rather than performance, the future of quality clarinets may be in the hands of the individual craftsman, rather than the traditonal "Big Four" manufacturers. Guy Chadash is a good craftsman, and when I have the chance, I am certainly going to audition a set of clarinets--and if they are better than my vintage instruments, I might just buy a couple (if my wife will let me, that is).

Ye, the Chadash clarinet doesn't cost that much more than the Buffet Tosca, so if you are willing to pay for a Tosca you might as well try the Chadash too. The only disadvantage I can think the Chadash has is he builds one for you and that is it. You don't have a few to try and choose from.

Those that I have tried are wonderful instruments. They play very even throughout the range of the instrument and respond beautifully. IF I had the $$ I would strongly consider buying a set. They are a real pleasure to play. Guy will work with you to customize them to your liking and to make sure you are happy.

Buyer Beware!!!! There's a big clause that goes with owning a Chadash horn and that is that he is the ONLY one authorized to work on the instrument. If you decide to have someone else work on it, his warranty becomes null-and-void.

I have tried Guys clarinets and think they are fine instruments. HOWEVER, i think it is interesting how any mouthpiece maker, clarinet maker, etc, creates a product that complies to their standards, sound, ideas, etc. Guy Chadash has a very small rigid traditional sound, and his clarinets reflect this. They are in tune for the most part and even in scale. I and some of my colleagues however prefer something with a bit larger more flexible sound, and Guys instrumnets simply do not do it for us.

I believe they are grossly overpriced, and his repair warranty is a farce. For example, if i am in LA and in need of emergency repair by someone in LA, say goodbye to the waranty.

On a personal level I find Guy extremely hard to deal wiith and rude, but you may not have the same experience many of us have had.

Good luck!

I wrote about Guy Chadash in my posting on the Clarinet Symposium, http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=178641&t=178641. As Chedmanus says, along with his great skill come strong opinions.

I think that's necessary. Each of the custom makers expresses a particulary personality. Steve Fox, Luis Rossi and Guy Chadash all make clarinets a cut above the commercial ones, but no two are alike. I'm sure that Morrie Backun's clarinets will also be different from anything else. I play clarinets customized by Kalmen Opperman, which are, again, unlike anything I've tried.

Ideally, you would have instruments from all the makers to try one after the other, to find which suits your particular way of playing. Unfortunately, that's not possible, and when you go to the individual makers, each has a personality strong enough to convince you that his way is best.

In the end, you have to please yourself, remembering what Larry Combs says -- after a few weeks with any new equipment, he's back to his own sound.

i would agree with chedmanus. i've tried a few out and they were not for me; certainly not worth the price that you have to fork over for these horns.

ken also makes a good point. there's always the one guy/gal who is an equipment freak. in the end, you will always sound like the basic "you".

I agree with the previous posts. No matter what instrument you are playing everyone whistles a differant tune.

I have owned a Chadash B-flat for 2½ years now and will soon buy an A.

The intonation is spot on, still with a flexibility to correct up or down if needed. The sound I produce on this gives me a good base for variations and is nothing like "rigid" to me. I don't know what "chedmanus" means by "Guy Chadash has a very small rigid traditional sound, and his clarinets reflect this". Guy has certain ideas about bore, conicisme [sp?], length of toneholes, placemrnt of speaker key and such, in what way do you mean these ideas reflect his own playing? The improvements as I see it are purely scientific and have nothing to do with a subjective sound concept.

Whether you play a factory made instrument from the "big four" or a handicrafted instrument it all comes down to that the instrument should give you the right frame work of your choice for you to build on. The implied statement that the Chadash clarinet necessarily would give you a "small rigid traditional sound" is truly false. The sound is in the head of the performer.

If I had the money for a Chadash, I would get one. So what if he's the only one who is authorized to work on it? Why would you want anyone else to work on it? He knows the ins and outs of the instrument and develops a relationship with the player--so why would you even be concerned about whether or not someone else can get their hands on it?

I'm playing a stock Buffet R-13 that I've just had pads replaced on and some work done on springs, etc.--I've been playing it for about 9 mos. now and it is really a sweet instrument. My tech isn't anywhere in Guy Chadash's league--but we're able to communicate about the instrument and that's very important. To own a Chadash would be a dream.
