 jazz-based question

jazz based question: I know the ascending or descending squiggly line is a "fall", but what is a straight (thin) line between two notes? example: the and of beat 4 is an altissimo E with a line tilted slightly downwards at an altissimo D. Is that kind of a downwards smear into the D perhaps? or something completely different?

I've always been told to play that as a smear. I just drop my fingers down from the first to the last note.

Yes, in western jazz notation (and especially if hand written script) it's likely a smear or scoop. If the music is electronically produced/engraved it "could" be a gliss, although all versions of Finale, Sheet Music Plus and Allegro I've worked with provide the squiggly line designating a gliss. Don't forget whenever bending pitch to end [on the beat] with a full-value, "in-tune" note. v/r Ken
