I've recently played Fiesta Mexicana by Owen Reed. I was selected to play with the county honors band, I was first second. The first chair was having trouble with the mairiachi band solo part. I was just wondering if anyone was familiar with this piece. We also played Shoryt Ride in Fast Machine. I played the Eb Clarinet in that piece. The Eb part was incredibly dificult, it was th piccolo and flute part, and most of them couldn't do it. I wanted to know if anyone ad any tips on that part or any type of music related to that level. The final piece was O Magnum Mysterium. Personaly that piece was incredibly boring.

Our band played La Fiesta. I was first chair. It was a lot of fun. Some really good solo's and such. Quite a few different styles too. But if you don't have fun with it then it is more of a chore to play. I dunno, for me playing is sort of like acting. And if I don't have the correct mindset for the music, then it just doesnt fly. During many parts I basically thought of a bar room full of drunk mexicans having the most fun of their live's. It was sort of like playing jazz during some parts, basically just having fun with it. The first solo part in the first movement is really beautiful, and then when it becomes a duet with the flute, that is some good music being made there. I wasn't really crazy about the second movement, mainly because our upper woodwinds, especially the second clarinetists, has some really bad intonation problems sometimes. I keep on thinking that its me, but everytime I go back to the tuner I'm dead on. However our first french horn plays the solo perfectly. I could go on for a while about that song. It's just a lot of fun. That and armenian dances are my favorites by reed.

Lol, I knew that too. Sorry. Btw on the mariachi part, it just seems that the notes have to sink in your brain to get it down, which can take a while. It is awkward and isn't exactly the easiest thing to get down in a short amount of time.

i would agree with the others. O Magnum is a gorgeous piece with wonderful musical phrasing. remember, this piece is orginally a choral work so the clarinet parts are not going to look like The Rite Of Spring by any means.

Have any of you played a wind ensemble transcription of Ave Maria by Franz Biebl? We played it this year at the University of Alabama honor band. It was one of the more beautiful pieces I've had the fortune to play in. It's also wonderfully sung by Chanticleer.

I have had the good fortune to play the Biebl Ave. Exquisite indeed! I'm sure the O Magnum would be equally so. I have a list of "desert island" CD choral pieces and those two are definitely on it.
