 New Vandoren Leather Ligature
Author: Aussie Nick

Has anybody had any experience with these new ligatures? I am expecting to be able to try them very soon. If you have tried them, how do they compare to the BG's?

I have one, unused, Nick.

It's OK, but a bit inflexible, so you need to tighten a fair bit to secure the reed.

The sound is certainly better than the BGs in my view, but I have eschewed leather for thin Bay ligs, which suit me better.

Is this the ligature that comes with some Vandoren mouthpieces? A student of mine had one of these. It was absolutely horrible. Kept making her sound bad, lose control of pitch, and squeak. I switched it with a Rovner (similar in design, but so different in execution) and the problems were gone. Neither are actually leather, of course. But the Rovner material is a better one from my experience.

Actually, the new Vandoren is genuine leather. It comes with 3 plates, metal, hard leather, and soft leather, each held on by velcro.

I was really hoping the metal plate would give a Bonade type of ring. But I found the leather to be too thick which seemed to dampen the reed vibration even with the metal plate installed.

Doesn't come with mouthpieces, but I agree with Steev B. - it isn't the most successful design ever.

Haven't tried it and I'm not going to try it. I played the metal one, but I really didn't like how the metal plates pressed themselves into the reed when I tightened the ligature. The point of contact on the reed is really visible in the wood after just using the ligature once.. I can’t stop thinking that this doesn’t hold back the vibration in anyway.

I'm very happy with my current leather ligature (Rovner Eddie Daniëls II). So way change a good concept? ;)

OpusII, Rovners are not made of leather, they're rubber-impregnated fabric (probably polyester but I'm not sure). I don't believe any cows are involved in the manufacture of the Rovners.
