Reed adjusting -- my first attempt...

Author: Steve Epstein  Date:   2005-04-27 04:18 Was a success! And I haven't even read any literature about it yet! I found a piece of very, very fine sandpaper (or is it emery cloth? I don't know the correct terminology) in my clarinet case, under the literally dozens of reeds I have that weren't easily playable and are awaiting adjustment some day. I'm not sure if Patricola included it with the clarinet (I doubt it) or it was something that got included with something else I bought way back. Anyway, I sanded down the edges, mostly the left, and avoided the tip, roughly following what GBK said he did with his reed knife back in a reply to my first post. It worked! It doesn't blow as easily as a V-12 #3 that works for me right out of the box, but it's better than before. And I've got plenty more to practice on for my learning curve. What I hadn't known previously was that you avoid the tip, and I had no idea that that far down the reed is what matters. I will eventually read and learn about this stuff (I am a guy who dives right into the box to assemble things and then reads the directions if there are left over parts). Oh, and I adjusted it on the mp during the gig. Yeah, I know, I know, but it's not a real serious gig -- I was playing for a college dancing class and there were others playing; I wasn't missed.
