I think the question is more - why do you recommend these?
Have you considered the Hite Premier, Fobes Debut, or Pyne Polycrystal? Significantly cheaper than the VD 5RV Lyre. I'm currently evaluating a Polycrystal, and so far seems to be an excellent mouthpiece for a very low price.

I COME FROM SLOVENIA AND WE DON'T HAVE ANY DEALER'S FOR
FOR THOSE MOUTHPIECES. WE OLNY HAVE SELMERS AND VANDORENS

I might suggest a slightly softer reed such as a #2 Vandoren rather than the #2.5 since the Vandorens run a bit harder than most other reeds. Children especially seem to struggle if the reed is too hard for them.

Then it's time to check out some of the mail-order places and/or encourage your local stores to carry some other lines. You may end up with better mouthpieces for less cost, even considering duty fees.

I agree with Dee, a Vandoran 2.5 reed sounds a little bit hard for beginners. I only play on a Vandoran 3 now.

My daughter played with a 5RV and when she tried her new Pyne Polycrystal, her tone quality was far better. It took over an hour to pry it away from her to try it on my clarinet. I'll be getting one for myself soon to replace my old 2RV. For the price, I think its well worth it. Maybe you can contact the folks at Pyne and make direct arrangements to try some.

Robert, I have been using that exact same setup with my students and have had excellent results. Many people here in Texas use that same beginner setup. I recommend a vandoren 2 1/2 or a Mitchell Lurie 3.

The 5RV is a fine mouthpiece for the money - no problem.
Mail order houses are great and I'm sure you'd be served well. Try them out, of course, but I think you'll find the 5RV will compare very well with all the others in that price range. All the best, E. Thomas

The 5RV is an excellent mouthpiece for beginners. As for the reed, it depends on the student, as well as the altitude. A Vandoren # 2 or 2 1/2 would work, but I would lean towards the # 2.

Robert's suggestion seems reasonable, considering the significant constraints. At least it's a good starter combination. I started out with this combination, but with Vandoren #2 or Lurie #2.5 reeds. These reeds are very soft for beginners and young students, so the reeds may not last as long as harder reeds. In addition, the novice may find the reeds less responsive as his/her embouchure strengthens, especially if (s)he is an adult novice. At least that's what I experienced as an adult novice with an hour a day practice sessions.
I also have to agree with the folks who say that if there is significant competition in their market for mouthpieces, take advantage of it and find the best mp for the money. Brand and model (and price) mean nothing compared to the ability to produce a superb tone. So, if you manage to fetch a "bargain basement" priced mp that produces an excellent tone, by all means keep it and use it. Then, pat yourself on the back for making a good technical and financial decision.

I think that it is great. I started with this mouthpiece when I started with my private teacher in 7th grade. I don't remember the reed strength, but it was somewhere in the neighborhood of V-12 2 1/2 to 3.
