I heard Vandorens were better reeds. So I bought a box. But the new Vandoren 3.0 reed seems stiffer than the cheapo Rico 3.0 reed that I had been using for some time. Do you suppose it'll "loosen up" as I use it? I'm using a Vandoren B44 MP on my Eb soprano clarinet.

Yes, Vandorens are stiffer than Ricos. Reed strengths aren't consistent from brand to brand. See the comparison chart below for more:

consistent from brand to brand?!?!?! I'm lucky if I can get a BOX of reeds with consistent strengths!

Whenever you try a new brand of reed, look at a comparison chart to see what the best size would be. Nothing is worse than getting what you think is a 3 and ending up with the equivalent of a 2.

I have done very little experimentation with reeds, but I do know something about Mitchell Luries, and I question the ratings of the Mitchell Lurie Premiums in relation to other reeds in the Rico family.
I use the Mitchell Lurie regular reeds, and have tried the premium French cut reeds on occasion. A #4 premium plays like a 4 1/2 regular. It doesn't make sense to me that the regular Lurie would be softer than a cheapo Rico.
Years ago I used Vandorens. Then my clarinet stayed in the case for a long time. When I returned to playing I asked a good friend (who plays well) what kind of reeds he used. He said he doesn't like Vandorens and uses only Mitchell Lurie.
He actually uses the premiums, but I didn't hear that part at first. I bought the regular Luries, liked them, and continued to use them. That was not from a lack of curiosity, but from a desire to avoid confusion and establish some consistency.
Judging from posts on the bulletin board, conventional wisdom still favors Vandorens.
