 Goodman Debussy Recording on 78
Author: James
Date:   2000-02-27 06:28

One of my greatest flea market finds is an old 78 RPM recording of Benny Goodman playing the Debussy Premier Rhapsody with The Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra of New York, John Barbirolli (not Sir John) conducting and another set of 78's of Goodman doing both Brahms Sonatas, and Reginald Kell playing the Weber Concertino, also a 78. I have heard them, but does anyone know if any of these have been re-released on CD or cassette tape?

Premiere Rhapsody and the Kell Concertino are available on CD (or have been in recent times). I'll dig out the details and let you have them. I don't know about the Goodman Brahms.

The Barbirolli is the same as Sir John, but before he was knighted.

I knew that it was John before it was Sir John, but I put that in to show that the recording is an old one (of course being on a 78 RPM would also do that). I appreciate you looking up the info. I think Benny Goodman did this recording of the Debussy before he went to swing. It sounds like a really good recording, but it is hard to tell on the 78 RPM record. Same with the Brahms Sonatas. The Kell concertino sounds like a good one also as far as I can tell. Thanks again for looking this up.

James -

All of these recordings have been re-released on CD, though some of them may have been deleted. The Goodman Debussy is available on Clarinet Classics 00010 (Historical Recordings Vol. 2) and also on Pearl/Koch 57. The Kell Concertino is on Testament 1002.

Goodman recorded the Brahms Sonata # 2 with Nadia Reisenberg, which is also on the Pearl/Koch CD. I'm pretty sure he did not record # 1. If you have it, please post the 78 rpm label and number.

The Kell Concertino has some wonderful playing on it, but it's not my favorite -- just too slow most of the time. As a contrast, get Historical Recordings Vol. 1 on Clarinet Classics 00005, which has a rip-snortin' acoustic recording (with big cuts) by Charles Draper. For an excellent balance between the two, get the Jon Manasse recording on the XCLNT label.

Best regards.

Ken Shaw

Ken, where can I order these CD's? I will look at the recording of the Brahms and see if it is 1 or 1&2 and post something tonight. Thanks for the info.
