Hi guys. I'm thinking about playing one of the tango etudes for sax/clarinet...on clarinet. Well I'm not thinking about it, I am going to do it. Right now I am merely trying to decide which one to play. I have already worked on the first and third ones, but I have never really heard them played by a professional and I fear that i could be missing something. For example I probably would have never really understood Rhapsody by Osbourne if I had not heard it played by Jon Cohler. I think a few of them are beyond my ability, but I'd like to hear them played well first before I make a decision. Does anyone know of a good recording of these pieces that I could either listen to online or purchase. It isn't really important to me what instrument it is that is playing it, whether it be sax, clarinet, or even cello if that has even been done. Just as long as it is recorded by a highly competent artist.
Thank you very much for any suggestions.

Search Amazon.com for "piazzolla tango etudes" without the quotes and you'll get about eight hits. The etudes were originally written for flute and that's what most of the recordings feature. I have the one with Patrick Gallois and can recommend it, especially since there is also a recording of "Histoire du Tango" on it. (There is a clarinet quartet version of this piece available that, IMO, is great fun to play.) There is also a version of the etudes by Gidon Kremer on violin. If that CD is anything like his "Hommage a Piazzolla," it would also be worth hearing. I have not heard the Naxos recording but, if you are a paid subscriber to their website, you can listen to it for free.
Best regards,
jnk
