 Key Heights
Author: presto214

I've recently come to notice that my key heights on my Leblanc Concerto have gone out of whack after over a year of heavy playing. Also the key mechanisms for the low E/B left hand key and the low F#/C# left hand key both have a lot of play in the key. It's the key mechanism where the greyish tube runs through the key and not the cork/lever system on older models. Can a local music store repairman fix the heights and the play in the keys or will I have to send it off to a clarinet repairman or even back to Leblanc to replace the loose keys?

AAHHH!

any compentent tech can fix that fairly quickly, if your local store has a good repair tech start there.

And if it hasn't got a good repair tech, run a mile!

You're playing a Concerto and you'd even consider taking it anywhere but to a Pro Technician???

I play a Concerto and I normally need to have the keys tweaked about every 12-16 months. They don't get sloppy rather I think in my case it is just that the cork and pads settle down a bit and I need to have the ring height adjusted. Now supposedly with the Concerto II, the mechanical mechanism of the keys was changged to be more durable and stable than the Concerto.

As far as a repair tech, personally I'd do some networking with players in the area if you have a university music school or symphony and find out who they use. Although most tech can do adjustments, the better ones understand the nuances involved which can make a instrument a joy to play rather than just functional.

Best
Rick
