Let me first say that I LIKE HUMISTATS
Not a blasted thing wrong with them, esp. if made of Lexan.
Now, for the more adventuresome, I offer the following option:
Get an old clarinet barrel.....Eb clar barrels are esp. nice
Get the top from a salt shaker or spice container
Get a sponge or the nice gel crystals that are used cigar humidifiers.
Get a cork or rubber stopper.
Put em all together (see pics).

You are a true craftsman. I especially like your inventive attempts to fix the eefer with your custom woodworking additions. This is a handsome concoction but not suited to everyone who does not have a spare barrel but definitely for the person that has everything but needs a high end humidifier!

What you will find is that the inner humidity level of the barrel used will eventually crack (explode??) the barrel.
Cause the inside will be drastically higher humidity level than the outside of the barrel.
It happened to a Clarinet one time a repair person (David Kee) was telling me. A teacher had told the student to put a dampit inside the bore of a clarinet and it litterally "exploded" it cracked so badly from that.
Cool idea though.....

Blummy....the gizmo can be made of any tube....in fact, the barrel in the picture was already cracked and poorly fixed with epoxy or CA glue (came with an ebay eefer. I replaced the barrel and Jacobi made the rest of the horn play like a champ.)....it is a piece of junk. After all, it is just meant to be a fun-yet-functional item. A pill bottle, old VapoRub jar with holes punched in the lid, etc. will also do nicely.
Salt and pepper shakers?.... I can not take credit for that idea....someone posted that a while back. I have also made wine bottle stoppers from old barrels.
A larger version works well a drawer where I keep reeds.
It maintains the drawer at 45% humidity. Humidors work well for this function. Maybe Clinton really had his humidor in the oval office for his sexaphone reeds....er, I mean Saxaphone reeds. (This board has already commented extensively on that possibility)

Good humidifiers, nice, Alseg. I used to use old film canisters, now use old pill bottles, with wet kitchen sponge pieces, and punctured lids. Of course, now, our normal home humidity level is 45-50 +? % so just open cases of "played" horns for dry-out. Don
