 mendelssohn concert pieces
Author: richard d

Hello,
Does anyone know of a good recording of the mendelssohn concertpieces for clarinet and basset horn in the arrangement with orchestral accompaniment?
Also, any ideas what the minimum orchestral forces you could manage with for performing this would be? (ie how vital the orchestral wind parts are etc)

Thankyou !

Richard

I've not heard this recording, but I'm pretty sure Thea King has both recorded with orchestra on a CD called "The Clarinet in Concert"... check www.amazon.com. I know it's on there..

Sabine and Wolfgang Meyer have recorded it- i got it on LP back in the 80s but i know that this has been transfered to CD- i think it's on the Sabine Meyer "picture disk" (yep, i'm not kidding) that has a bit of everything and is REALLY REALLY worth getting.....
if you are playing with a Basset horn player, then keep the orchestra quite small- but i don't know about leaving out the wind parts.... my limited experience with other pieces has suggested that this is not such a great idea.
keep playing the good tunes

Another vote for the Meyers' recording...it's sensational.

Thea King's rendition with her on all three parts is also worth having even if it is with piano and not orchestra, just to marvel at the fact she managed to pull it off!

RAMman,

What do you mean all three parts? Did you she play the piano part also? If so, that is quite impressive!

Correct.

The orchestration of Op.113 was done by Mendelssohn, and the orchestration of Op.114 was by Baermann. Both were completed in 1833. ..GBK
