 Effects on clarinets
Author: clarnibass

Hi

I was thinking about buying an effect to use with my clarinet and bass clarinet. Something like a looper so I can basically play and overdub live. The one I'm most interested in is the Loop Station RC-20XL by Boss (made for guitarists basically) but unfortunately Boss doesn't have email support :(

I am looking desperately for people who are familiar with this effect. I couldn't find a decent guitar forum too. If anyone here know a guitarist that has this effect please let me know, or if you can contact us even better.

I will also need a pretty good microphone with that. A microphone that would receive all the clarinet or bass clarinet notes evenly (as much as posible) but also won't get the sound from the speaker back into it. Also a mic that is not too expensive.

Thank you very much

Nitai

Dr. Gerry Errante would be the person I'd contact. He's a pioneer in real-time effects for clarinet.

my teacher plays bass clarinet and a version he dubs the robotic clarinet. its hooked up to an effects board. He might have some insight into your issue.

Michele Gingras http://www.fna.muohio.edu/faculty/gingram/, in addition to being a great player and a lovely person, knows a tremendous amount about electronic effects. She gives spectacular concerts using, I think, the Yamaha Electric Wind Instrument as well as special effects on clarinet.

Anyone know if Garage Band on Mac Computers can do this?? It's my understanding that it can, but I haven't figured it out yet.

The issue you will have with computer-based effects is latency. Without getting into computer programming issues, basically it takes more time with software-based effects than dedicated effects hardware to get the sound back out. The computer becomes a delay line, and even unprocessed the sound coming back will be a few to many milliseconds later than the original sound. What I would recommend is a Lexicon, TC Electronic or other dedicated multi-effects box which has loop sampling as well as reverb, phasing, pitch shift and other fun stuff. Much better for live sound application.

Have fun!
