I've been playing on the same Moennig B flat barrel since 1997, although i used a Jimmy Jan barrel for a while. On A clarinet i've mainly used Chadash barrels. I've never really found another barrel for B flat that beats this Moennig i've been using- i supose you could be forgiven for thinking that it's because i'm used to it after al these years......
.... anyway, imagine my suprise when i tried out an old DEG C 66D that i somehow inherited ages ago but have never really played. Compared to my other barrels (including hand picked Buffet, Chaddash, Scott, Yan, Pyne etc) it really sounds pretty darn nice. OK, the left hand 12ths were about 5c wider than on Moennig, but the tone was very very sweet...... clear, "rounded"...
i have to say, it sounded better than most of the wooden barrels i have, and maybe slightly more resonance than my "old favourite". The intonation was good, just not quite good enough. It might be that the Eddie Danniels Moennig bore works for me- i'll try one at the OK Symposium.
......so i guess that what i'm trying to say is.... don't snub DEG if you are looking around, and don't care what the mafia think. There could be something there for you, and let face it.... the price is good!
