I heard that there was a BBb Contra Bass Clarinet part to the Holtz "First Suite in Eb for Military Band", but our librarian doesn't have it. Does anyone know for sure if it does or does not exist?

We've played the piece 2 months ago, and we didn't have a contra part either. Perhaps the simplest solution is to take a string bas part (can that be done?)

Joris-
Someone sent E-Mail saying that they had played a Bb Bass Saxophone part, so I'll check back with the librarian.
I'm not very good at transposing, and would be lost with Bass Clef, so the String Bass part may not be a good approach for me.
There is a trick you can use with an Eb instrument, where you read the Bass Clef part of an instrument in the Key of C as if it were Treble Clef, and add three sharps. The same might be possible with a Bb instrument, but I haven't figured out which key the Bass Clef part would need to be, or how many sharps to add or subtract.

Yes, there IS a contra part. I have the 'symphonic' set full score and it lists Bb contra Bass Clarinet on the front of the score. Now, where is the part..........? It also lists the Bb contra part along with the Bb bass sax part as a line in the score. Sorry, I don't have a set of parts, just the full score. I did it at a conducting clinic a few years back at N.W. La. University (Natchitotches) and only purchased the score. Check with the publisher --Bossey & Hawkes--and see what they say about it.

I do recall some [community band] bass cl parts which have CB written in, principally for the rhythmic 5th's usually assigned to string or BBb basses. It may be in H's Second Suite. Sometimes I just get handed a separate CB part [by a flute player!!]. Yes, most of us can handle the transposition of bass clef C parts to contra alto or bari sax easily, and one can learn [or feel-out the key] to trans. to C B with practice. Luck, Don

It looks like a Bb instrument could play a Bass Clef part the same way, if it was for an instrument in the key of G.
Are there any Tubas or other common low instruments in the key of G?

Yes, prob. Not as far as I know,[tympani?], I'd refer the question to our music majors, I'm only an engineer! Fred, did you contact Alphie? Don

If you have access to a EEb contra alto you can transpose a little easier(at least for me). All bass clef parts are written as if for a C instrument, key signature wise. Just read those string bass and tuba parts as treble clef and to get the right key sig. just go clockwise three notches on the circle of fifths (like adding 3 sharps). Some accidentals may have to be corrected, but its easy.

There is indeed a real BbContra part for the suite. It joins the baritone in the opening solo. My school has a copy of that part. No contra though, so we have the regular bass play it
