My local orchestra (Toronto Symphony) is featuring this next year, and the subscriber renewals are due. Does anyone know this orchestration?
The only concert I have ever considered asking for my money back featured a piece by Berio.

It's just an orchestration. You wouldn't guess it was by a "modern" composer. I don't particularly like it, but I doubt it will send you screaming for the exit.
What will confuse you, however, is that Berio has added a few bars at the very start of the piece. As soon as the clarinet enters, it will sound very familiar.

It's been recorded by Wolfgang Meyer for EMI and James Campbell for Cala. Also, there used to be an mp3 floating around the internet with Michelle Zukovsky and the L.A. Philharmonic. You might still be able to find it somewhere.

not my favourite transcription- i confess i do find those extra opening bars really really annoying. Not only are they "not Brahms", but they're "not as good as Brahms"

I just stumbled across the Zukovsky recording on CD at my small local bookstore. Who'd've thought? They have about 1 foot of shelf space devoted to CD's and in that space, multiple copies of 3 different clarinet compilations by Michelle Zukovsky and one by her father, Kalman Bloch with a picture on the cover of him from the 60's. Sometimes it pays to browse!
Anyway, disappointed by the Brahms Sonata orchestration. The extra bars threw me off and added nothing. The orchestration is very thick and Brahmsian ... authentic in that way, some great French Horn harmonies towards the end - but the clarinet is often buried and the sometimes playful interaction between clarinet and piano is not well-duplicated in the orchestra performance. I kept having to strain to pick up Zukovsky's sensitive turns of the phrases, and this was on a good sound system. Honestly, it was boring to listen to - and the sonata is not a boring piece, and Zukovsky is not a boring player!
On the other hand, the Brahms clarinet quintet on the same CD was exquisite. Especially the clarinet in the second movement - Zukovsky has a great feeling for the music.

Susan - I produced those compilations. They were from the now defunct mp3.com. Michele's Brahms Quintet will be back in circulation pretty soon.
