I am interested in a Selmer Series Nine b flat clarinet, the one I found is $850, is this a good deal? It is fully repaded and corked, I have no idea... thanks

I don't believe the price to be unreasonable if it is in good condition. Consider the price of a new pro line insturment and $850 is not a bad price. The Series 9 is not a polycylindrical clarinet and features that big full Selmer sound that made the Centered Tone, Balanced Tone, and Series 9 so popular among doublers (sax/clarinet) and jazz clarinetists.

Hi Amanda;
I just recently purchased a Selmer 10G on Ebay for $850. IMHO the 10G is somewhat better in intonation across it's range than the 9. However this horn needs some work done to it. Particulary regulation. It also appears overly dry.
So, in the end "you pays your money and takes your chances."
I would guess that a 9 in playable condition would go for $600 to $800.
Check the classifieds in the "Woodwinds" mag. I recall seeing a 10G for about $850.
Cheers,
Paul

$850 is a bit on the high end, I bought a series 10S which is a more modern version, fully overhauled for $800 last summer. But the important thing is how the instrument plays for YOU! If you like it, $850 is not out of the range. My advise is to try it out before you buy it.

Yes, it sounds a bit high to me also, of course not being on a coast, our prices are less. Good quality Leb's and Sels here sell for some $5-700, Buffs a bit more. Use info from EBAY and Brook Mays in your bargaining to save a few $'s. Don

A local store has a "Series 10" that appears to be in average shape for $999. Is the 10G something different. I saw a reference to a 10S somewhere. I'm interested in determining what this thing is really worth -- then some more play testing!
