Karl Leister's Tone on Brahm's Clarinet Trio
Author: wjk

Karl Leister's tone on Brahm's Clarinet Trio is peerless in my opinion---he also blends fabulously with the other players---any insight into such an amazing performance?

Every note is heard. There isn't a time that he hides behind the other players. You can hear all parts equally. This is what stands out in my mind about his trio. Even though I have some other great trio recordings(Pieterson, Carbonare, etc.), none match IMHO what Leister has done. So I certainly agree with your statement!

I personally find his interpretation of the piece (at least on my recording) a little bland, but then again, I like Stoltzman's, so take my opinion for what it's worth...

WJK offered, "Karl Leister's tone on Brahm's Clarinet Trio is peerless in my opinion"

DH said, "I like Stoltzman's, so take my opinion for what it's worth"

I only wish I could play like either of them. [frown]

Leister has recorded all of the standard repertoire many times. Which version of the Brahms do you have?

I prefer his earlier recordings, on DGG. The ones issued on Japanese labels sound, for me, a bit burned out.

I too agree with Ken on this one...I find as of late Leister to less expressive and somewhat dry at times in terms of style..he tends as of late not to differentiate soft and loud as much as when he was a younger player. But, he is truly wonderful and has a great sound!

However, he is an incredible player and a master as well as an excellent role model for any aspiring clarinetist.

As to the Trio his first on DG is my favorite, but if any collectors are out there the Prinz version on Eurdisc(Munchen) is absolutely first rate.

Leister with Amadeus in the Quintet from 67 is unbeatable~!

I shall be playing the Trio this summer at a chamber music festival...so I'll listen to the recent Leister offerring again!

A Karl Leister fan!
