 How do YOU sell yourself...

I enjoy teaching private lessons, but haven't figured out a way to get new students to flock to my door. All of the students I've taught were referrals from school teachers, my professors, or parents of former students. Also, the students that I do teach progress very well, and are becoming known in the middle school/high school music scene. But, in total, I think in the last 5 years I've only had about 10 students.

Although I admit it is fun to say that I take students by referral only, I would like to break out of that and expand my weekly student list. I would appreciate any suggestions that you might have of approaches that have worked for you in the past (or present).

BTW...I've done the drop-off-a-flyer-at-every-school-in-the-area thing.

What I am looking for specifically is things you might have put ON the flyers that got a good response, or other creative marketing hints.

From my own personal experience, the best way is to be chummy with the band directors. In the districts where I teach, the teachers will actually push kids harder into lesson when they have a good teacher in mind (I mean, they encourage all kids to take lessons anyway). I have 60 students, and I got all of them through connections with band directors. Obviously, the way every school handles lessons may differ, but I'm sure that having good rapport with the band directors is helpful, no matter how the lessons system works. Good luck

You can have some of my students. I've got a wait list. Get a couple of students into regional or all state band and orchestra, and you'll have more students than you can cover. Nothing builds your list faster than having students reach a high level of achievement.

You might also try getting aligned with a music store or community music school. Good sources for students if you don't mind teaching beginners.

I would like to recommend a book to read:"Making Money Teaching Music" by David and Barbara Newsam (1995 pub. Writer's Digest Books,ISBN 0-89879-657-1)

They have some solid real life ideas about getting students and running an efficient private teaching practice.

And, the title is not tongue-in-cheek!
