I just saw the lineup for the upcoming OU Clarinet Symposium -- Morales, Manasse, Combs and Verdehr. Man, talk about Murderer's Row! Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio and the Mick will probably stop by, too!
Anyway, now I'm thinkin' of going. Is it advisable for amateurs like me to go there, or is the program really structured for pros and students? Jon Manasse will be offering a master class, and I wouldn't mind gettin me some of that learnin.

Do it, R G, its well worth it, even for our "newbies" . I've been to several, see old WW f[r]iends, new insts and gear , tryouts possible. Master classes are VERY educational, even for us "visitors", applause is usually OK ! I always come away re-enthused. Great surroundings, hope for a BBoard reunion, Mark/GBK ?? Don

It comes at kind of an inconvenient time for me to travel, but, man, this thing is something I'll probably kick myself for years to come if I miss it. Reminds me of those superhero comic books where Superman and Batman and Spiderman and everyone come together for a superhero summit, but with clarinets.

The OU Clarinet Symposium was founded by and continues to be expertly run by (my former teacher) Dave Etheridge.
He always brings in a number of prominent players. Recitals, master classes, discussions, demonstrations and ensembles are held, as well as displays by the major manufacturers.
Many have said it is much like Clarinetfest, but on a more intimate level...GBK

I was there back in 1993 when Harold Wright played (also, Stoltzman, Eddie Daniels, Gary Foster and other wonderful players). Highly recommended. Any clarinet player would enjoy and benefit from it.

stay in the dorms at OU
less glamorous than a motel
but easy walking distance from all the concerts etc
and much more convenient for those in good health
and/or not suffering from chronic laziness

Where can I find information about the OU Symposium? I would love to go, being only 17, I think it would be a great experience to have and it would probably encourage me a lot. (Well I think it would help me at any age, but it would be great to have at my age too!)

In my experience it has been a great joy to go to the OU Symposium for the past 5 years. I have always stayed in the dorms and had some great jam sessions with fellow dorm mates as well as deep and interesting conversations about every aspect of clarineting. It is a wonderful chance to make new friends and contacts as well as renew old friendships. The dorms are a real deal because they come with a meal ticket to the cafeteria which is used to serving hungry students with lots of food. The walk is about 1/3 mile from the dorms to the performance hall but along a flat and lovely tree lined street.
David Etheridge is a real gentlemen and grandfather to many of the current greats in the performance field and an approachable host. As has been noted the atmosphere is much more casual than the typical ClarinetFest and the ability to talk easily with the "greats" abounds during the symposium. All of the major instrument manufacturers and accessory vendors will also be present with their wares to tease and tantalize even the hard core scrooge! (Disclaimer - me too with Doctor's Products and Forte' clarinet)
