 Duet for Violin/Clarinet
Author: Marnix van den Berg
Date:   2005-04-07 07:24

I've been asked to perform at a poetry recital in the intermission with a Violin friend of mine and I've been looking for suitable material in the composition database. Even though there's plenty of titles, there's little enough information on the pieces themselves. I'll probably go to the music store and browse through them, but I thought I'd ask if anyone knows any nice pieces to perform.

Has anyone played the following pieces and what are they like?

Duo concertante, op. 16, no. 3 ,C minor by Etienne Gebauer
Serenata for violin and Bb clarinet by Iain Hamilton
Two Duets by Paul Hindemith
Sonata, no. 5 by Franz Anton Hoffmeister

If anyone knows any other nice pieces or possibly transcriptions, I'd be much obliged. I'm particularly interested in the difficulty of the Violin part since my friend is not a music major and we don't have months to prepare.

Oh, and before you mention it. I did search the board and most posts about this are about violin/clarinet with piano. We won't have a piano there (or a player) so I can't do any accompanied things.

What about taking any duet for Flute and clarinet, and let the violin play the flute part? That's what I did with my violin playing friends, and it worked okay.

If the violinist is up to it, you might try the Muczynski Duos for Flute/Clarinet. I imagine it would sound pretty good with violin, although I don't know if it would sit well for violin, or if it would be awkward to play... It's something to look at, though (great piece).

I've also had good luck adapting the Mozart quintet (using clarinet and first violin parts as the guts of it) and the Sinfonia Concertante for winds (K297), using the Oboe part for the Violin.
