Braces!
Author: ClarinetChica

Hey! I'm 14/f and studying clarinet/sax/flute/piccolo and piano. I have braces, and I've had them for like 3 years. Lately I've been having a lot more problems (and pain) playing. Anything I can do, other than that worthless wax stuff till I get my braces off? Email me please... Thanks!

This seems a little strange, since you've had braces for so long without problems; are you sure that the pain is a result of the braces, or have you changed something in your playing? In any case, if the braces are in fact the problem, go to a sports store and get yourself the plastic used to make toothguards for sports. The instructions on the package will tell you how to meld it to fit your teeth, but before you do, soften it once and stretch it out so that the material is a little thinner. If you fit this stuff to your teeth, and cut it so it covers just the front of the bottom teeth, it should help. Hope this works for you!

I've never taken my teacher's advice on this, but maybe it will work for braces. After I had my braces taken off, my lower lip hurt terribly in this one spot. I am now used to it, so I didn't listen to my teacher. She suggested to take a mouthguard and melt a small piece(the size of a dime) and mold it to your mouth. Make several of these since one is going to feel the most comfortable. Make sure that after it is out of the boiling water to mold it to your mouth immediately so that it doesn't harden. Then let it cool. You then have your own little mouthguard.

There's very good instructions for doing this in the Klarinet Archives. You can stretch that piece of plastic very thin.

Or you could-if your kinda stingy-go to the drugstore and buy a box of EZo, which can be found in the denture section, and it was originally made as a denture pad, but during those long hours of rehearsal they become quite helpful and make playing a lot more comfortable. I usually take the pads and cut them into 3rds and you suck on it to make it soft then mold them around you bottom front teeth. I think a box of EZo costs around $2.75 last time I bought a box

In the 4 years I had to play with braces (who invented those things!) when things realy hurt bad on one single spot, there was most of the time some litle wire or the like sharply pointing forward. Since i saw the dentist who placed the braces once a month I had them remove the sharpness (happened twice)
Mostly it's just pain untill hard skin comes on.
