 My tongue hurts!
Author: Aussiegirl

Ive been doing a lot of work on my articulation recently, and this morning i did a good hour and a half on stacato scales and trying to get a study very crisp. I then went to a band rehersal and now the tip of my tongue is really sore, like burning! Has anybody else come accross this? I spose its a good sign that my embouchure isnt tired, my endurance must be finally improving, but how long will my tongue feel like this? Its weird!

Tongue is muscle tissue like all the rest. You probably just overexherted it.

Give it a day or two - play legato only during the "rest" period - and the lactic acid buildup (the chemical result of using muscles) will be carried away naturally. And you'll be stronger next time.

You "felt the burn" as the exercise nuts tell us to do.

Oh, and don't talk while you are waiting. ;-)

I used to have the problem where my tongue would bleed constantly. When I was done playing, my reeds would be soaked in blood. Pretty gross, I know. Just lay of the tonguing! : )

Yeah, that would happen to me. Bloody reeds are not a very nice thing. Especially if it's a good reed...then you have to try to clean it and...it's a mess, a real big mess. (Not to mention painful)

I used to have a bloody tongue and reeds long time ago. I could solve this by taking a good rest. Then, I started practicing again......and I had that problem any more. Articulation, especially staccato, takes more time to become familiar with. Good luck!!

my tongue gets like that every once in awhile...I just deal with it. I don't think you can do anything about it..maybe get some ice! :)

p.s. bloody reeds seem like battle scars...heh heh

Funny you bring this up- I worked so long last week that I ended up with a bloody tongue. I was sort of proud of it.

well at least it isnt bloody, just sore! Ive been trying to practice today stuff that doesnt require much staccato so its not too bad. I think id be a bit scared if my reeds went bloody!

And I thought it was lipstick that made the reeds red. :-)

I've noticed the more I play stuff that requires a lot of fast tonguing, the more sensitive my tongue is to picante salsa. My brothers and sisters, you have no idea how hard it is to live in South Texas and suddenly have difficulty eating hot sauce.

I notice that articulation excercise requires more embouchure. The embouchure needs more support and controll when I articulate the notes. So, it is actually good to do, I think.

Tongue......should be relaxed, high positioned "ee", and lightly touched on reed when articulate the notes......these are something I can think of...
