If Youth Knew If Age Could
Author: John Stackpole
Date:   2005-03-31 16:21

In reading these posts I am amazed and delighted to see the range of ages that people admit to. There's hope for me yet.

So, a contest:

Who is the oldest, who the youngest clarinet player here - beginner, amateur, pro, retired, any brand/type of cl., makes no difference.

The two extremes get to buy a Doctor's Power Barrel at some sort of discount,
right, Dr.? (I figure the very young and the "very" old would both need the boost.)

I come in at 69, which isn't gonna win me anything.

I plead guilty to 85 yrs, 9 mo's and a few days, and have been playing woodwinds for about 10 yrs less. Dr. Omar, I'd like a Power Barrel compatible with 1960-80 Leblancs AND [??] Selmer-Paris 1954 CT and ? a recent Selmer-USA Omega. A 64 mm length would match the shortest present lengths, with tuning rings if needed, I believe. Recommendations? [EM]. In case of loss of "status", I'd even buy one at list. J S, my other info is in our archives, somewhere. Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

I'm a really old guy, but Don beats me by almost fifteen years. Fortunately, I already have a Power Barrel.

I propose that Monsieur Stackpole add an additional prize for "most average age" , that is, the BB'er whose age is closest to the exact arithmetic average of all the ages represented here. I agree this would be more difficult to determine, but at least I'd have a shot at winning.........(at 47). Whaddya say, John?

Bob, hope I wasn't that harsh, I make up for it by "just cant remember which thread I said it in". Just did it again ! "a preposition is a bad thing to end a sentence WITH". My good comm. band buddies [we car-pool], an 84 'er and a young 77 'er [a good driver] want me to "run" for oldest in our Tulsa C B, no prize here tho, just keep trying to play better ! Whoopee, Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

My deep respect to our senior bboarders. Just curious, do we have many clarinet-playing grandmas here too?

I'm 36.

<<My good comm. band buddies [we car-pool], an 84 'er and a young 77 'er [a good driver] want me to "run" for oldest in our Tulsa C B,>>

The current president of our community band (who is a darn good clarinetist) turns 87 this year, and has played in the band since its founding in 1930 -- one of two people still active from that date. But he's not on this board -- pity!

Yeah, Lucy, there are probably quite a few clarinet grannies posting here too. But what lady would want to reveal her age? ;)

Golly ....... at 78.25 yrs, both Don and Bob make me feel like a youngster.
Lots of memories that I'm sure we could share ...... started making 'clarinet noise' in October, 1936 ......

Joe.

I feel like I am 21 but strange enough, my mother claims I am 47. I think I look a young 75. I am all over the place. Do I qualify for a power barrel?

IMO age is mainly a state of mind.

Looks like Don at 85 + and Elizabeth at 16 are the big winners.

Unfortunately, you will have to negotiate your Power Barrel "discount" directly with the good Doctor - he didn't rise to the bait (of my using his name and product in a totally unauthorized manner) and jump in with HIS age and an offer.....

Seems like a good marketing ploy to me.....

I don't think I'll bother to calculate the average age or what might be even more interesting, the distribution of ages.

Thank you all.

JDS

Birthday is today (no foolin')
holding at 39

My grandfather told people he was 39 until he was into his 70s. Then he didn't think people would believe him anymore so he said he was 49 after that.

I was wondering if any of the older musicians on the board would be interested in answering a few questions (off the board, via email) about their musical experience, how long they've been playing, how playing affects their quality of live, etc. for a research paper Im writing.

My email is james2367@hotmail.com. If you could label it from the Clarinet forum so I'll be able to recognize it that would be great.

Thanks for your time! And any help is greatly appreciated. I really would like to get different perspectives. :-)

(And I hope this is okay to ask on this board...)

Thanks again! Jamie

This place is a great source of info.

And let us hope that sugarhigh doesn't get overwhelmed about the amount of "clarinet lore" available here - as I sometimes am - variations in: reeds, equisetum hyemale, ligatures, mouthpieces, barrels, upper and lower parts (joints?), the size of the hole/bore, wood, vs. plastic, vs. ceramic, vs. metal, vs. glass(?), key parts, pads, rings, corks, grease, oil, bells, tuners, tuning rings, 440s, K622s, swabs. Even the box to carry the thing around in gets discussed. And the humidity INSIDE the box. Good Grief. (Did I leave anything out?)

S.High: just get the notes right and play them in the right time. It'll sound great - to you if not to everybody else. But who cares about them?

Sugarhigh -- have fun and don't buy a clarinet from any store that also sells mayonnaise in 5-gallon jars.
