After well over a year of not touching the good ole clarinet, I decided to pick it up today, and to my amazement, I can still almost play, leading me to believe that going back to school might not be totally out of the question. What's the standard repertoire to audition at your not-so-top-of-the-line schools these days anyway? And what exactly are these places looking for in an applicant (especially somebody looking to transfer)?

That's like asking, "What's a good piece for clarinet?" !!!!
It depends on the school...what's your definition of "not-so-top-of-the-line schools"? Do a little research on the websites and you find out soon enough. Generally the material is pretty open except for orchestral excerpts which tend to be the same no matter where you go.

I know at UMKC's Conservatory of Music they recommend:
Concerto no. 1 and no. 2 by Weber
Concertino by Weber
Mozart's Clarinet Concerto
Something by Crussell
But they said that others are acceptable beyond the few that they listed.
You'd be safe with any standard clarinet piece. Weber would be a safe bet.

Hey Dave! I shoulda known you'd be lurking around these parts of the world What's your opinion on this subject? To answer the question of what are the not-so-top-of-the-line schools, btw, we're talking about the Texas A&M-Commerce Campus type places....

Way back in 1985, I auditioned at Texas A&I (now Texas A&M-Kingsville) with cheese works like the Rabaud Solo de Concours, the Scene and Air (see post farther down on the board), and some Rose 40 stuff and Klose book stuff. I can't remember if I was auditioning to get in, or if it was a scholarship audition. Either way, I got both (it was only like a $250 award or something, but in '85 that was like, I dunno, $275 today, or about 3 Euros).

2 favorites of mine are the 1st mvt of the Weber Concerto #1 and the Debussy Premiere Rhapsodie
Stick with the standard stuff.

Premiere Rhapsodie - you are SERIOUSLY overestimating me right now. Is the general concensus that things like Fantasy Piece (Schumann) won't work anywhere? And what about schools that don't actually require an audition, are those places to stay away from??
