I'm wondering if anyone knows someone who plays alto clarinet for jazz--I mean in small-ensemble work. I understand that most people would gravitate to alto sax, but it seems to me that the alto clarinet's mellow tone would work well for some jazz.

Yes, I've thot about it, but not having to master the "break" plus potential loudness on sax are motivators. I have the choice of either in our church orch. {not very jazzy!] to play [transposed] french horn parts. Will post if I find anything of significance! Don

I've thought about that too. I've played soprano in jazz band by sight transposing alto sax music. I've also played contralto and bass rather than tenor or bari sax. If I had an alto clarinet to play, I would play it in jazz band.

I wish my band director would let me play any clarinet in Jazz Band. I have to play tenor, and I really don't enjoy it very much. But, on the plus side, we are doing a song called "A Tribute to Benny Goodman." So maybe I will get to do the clarinet part.

This year our new band director said (since I can play both clarinet and alto clarinet) that I could play my alto clarinet in the jazz band this year. I would play the alto saxophone part instead of the alto clarinet. I'll tell you how it sounds when we get our middle school jazz band together.

Italian jazzman Gianluigi Trovesi plays ALL the clarinets. Look for his recordings on Italian labels such as Musica Jazz.
