Apparently, the Phlorescent Leech and Eddie, known to some as Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman, also of the Turtles and Mothers of Invention, began their musical lives on clarinet. They both studied under the same teacher in Westchester, CA. Interesting how clarinet music molds young minds. I'll have to get out Live at Fillmore East again and listen for the clarinet solos.

Van Cliburn played clarinet in his high school marching band -- but I remember hearing he switched to some other instrument. Which one I don't know...

Perhaps if Mr. Cliburn had stuck to clarinet and not switched, he'd be famous today and people would know what instrument he played??
And GBK, you forgot Alan Greenspan.

Greenspan is off my list until the DJIA is back over 12,000
He actually went to Juilliard to study clarinet, but came to his senses after a semester, dropped out and then went to NYU to study commerce...GBK

According to a recent biography "The Cowboy and the Seniorita", Roy Rogers also played clarinet in his youth.
Anyone who wants to see what playing clarinet (or music in general) can do to you, has only to watch Flo & Eddie in "200 Motels".
