I need some help...I am a past student of Joe Allard and he got me a mouthpiece made by Dave Hite that required a 5 strenth reed, german cut from Vandoren...they do not make any reeds like this in 2005 and I need a reed that will work for this mouthpiece....any ideas of what will be hard to give me the dark rich sound I need without blowing off my head or having the reed close after a short time.
I am looking for the person who was the closest to Joe Allard before he past on....I have a few questions him ...did he take anyone "under his wings" who knows him very well?
Thanks

Dennis:
I studied with Joe many years ago. He took many of us, if not all, "under his wings." Joe could answer almost any question asked by his many students. I can't promise the same, but I can answer a few for you. Call or email me at any time.
I believe one of his finest students is Dave Tofani. Dave studied with Joe for many years, and sounds and looks like Joe when he plays the clarinet.
He can be contacted through his fine website at:

As far as your HITE mouthpiece question:
Use a fairly hard (4 or 5) regular Vandoren reed, with a good standard ligature, and you'll do just fine for starters.
Good luck,

I would say for Clarinet you could try John Cippola as he was one of Joe's last students. I studied with Joe in the late 70's early 80's.

I use the Grand Concert Thick Blank and find that I can get a much darker sound on them than the Vandoren's (V-12's are easy to play, but I don't like their sound nearly as much).
Also you could try the new Vandoren Rue LePic - they sound pretty good too.
I also like the Gonzalez FOF
