Hello, I have a Buffet clarinet made in the 60s with F series number. Where can I buy a barrel that can tune it down to play at 440? Thanks. Willy

Look to the right side of this message...there is a list of links to those retailers that help sponsor this site.
Look under "mouthpieces and barrels."
Click the links that appear. Lotsa choices.

Start with measuring your barrel to the nearest 0.5mm. Then play your throat tones and pull out at the barrel until you're satisfied with the intonation on those notes when fully warmed up. Measure how much you had to pull out to achieve the intonation you desired. I would then look for a Buffet barrel about 0.5-1.0mm shorter than the sum of your barrel length plus the amount you pulled out. You need a little room to adjust to the ensemble if they're playing a bit flat. Buffet barrels show up on ebay regularly - it might be a good time to step up to a Chadash!

That's the basics. It's not the whole tuning scheme, and it's probably not going to give you perfect tuning. You might need to tune clarion C by pulling out between the joints. I'm not a big believer in the barrel being the only difference between different pitched clarinets - at least not in Buffets of that vintage. If you find a perfect solution, please post immediately.
