I was reading the thread about the tendency toward playing fast 16th notes and how players love to play those fast runs, etc. The first thing one of my clarinet teachers did to his students was send them into "Slow Note Hell" (his term). He said it was because the male students especially loved to play lots and lots of fast notes and show off their "virtuosity." However, one must learn to play a beautiful sound that is also in tune before going to the fast stuff. Because I was never one to love the fast stuff, I didn't stay in slow note hell very long--but it was all about mental discipline and training of the ear.

I'd rather play slow notes than fast ones. They seem to be much more fun to play.

I prefer a combination of slow note and fast note hells in the same song. You can work on your technique and also your breath support.
I play bass sometimes in orchestra and I am usually in slow note hell which is really boring. The only bass song that I have played which wasn't in slow note hell was Samson and Delilah by Saint-Saens. That was actually a challenge and it was fun.
I, like many others when having the option to play slow or fast would choose fast: I think it gets the brain stimulated and the juices flowing.

(brenda)
..............breath control and lungs...................and an ear listening to the pitch of notes and developing eveness, finger lift and placement......at the EXACT tic of the metronome............and there is always rhythm
slow practice gives fast fingers

I think Brenda makes an excellent point to call it "long" note hell. If such notes are played with a mentality of "slow", the airstream will likely match.
