 Bb case recommendations?
Author: MSK

The case that my 1971 Buffet R-13 came in needs to be replaced. What single cases do people like? I've noticed that several online music stores are sold out of the Buffet line right now, so I am open to other suggestions. I do prefer a case that has room to store reeds & a pencil inside with the instrument, rather than only in an outside pocket like some of the Protec cases. Currently, I am using my double case, but I usually don't need to haul around my A clarinet after the March concert. Incidently, I am a fairly skilled adult amateur in a community symphony orchestra -- not a professional. So I am looking for good, but not necessarilly pro quality case. Thanks.

MSK,

I have seen many of the newer Buffet model cases on eBay for about $35 or so. I bought one for one of my Selmers (it fit fine although as I recall, the R13 has a slightly bigger radius on the bell ring). Buy yourself a cover with a shoulder strap as well.

Personally, I prefer and use a large Selmer briefcase model from the 1980s that has a huge amount of room. I have a terrific Olathe case which has several outside pockets. Better to have too much room than not enough. I keep my stand, several MPs and ligatures, lots of reeds, a tuner, and other assorted items in the briefcase. My stuff is a little heavier but...

i've seen several of my students with the newer buffet cases have trouble with them- hinges and latches failing after a year or 2. seems to be a quality issue with them lately. the cases that come with the new E11 and R13's seem especially prone to hinge failure within a few years.

i know you specificially excluded the protec cases, but they seem very durable and protect the instrument well. plus the added benefit of having the swab cloth in an outside pocket - getting the moisture away from the horn.

Ive used one of the new Buffet R13 cases for 4 and a half years now...still good as new.... Plus they are great with a cover [such as Cavarello (<-sp)]....

Thanks for the warning on Buffet case quality. I'll take another look at Protec.

If you don't mind appearances, my case is the original from 1969-70 Buffet. I was going to get a newer one, but husby put the handle on more firmly with duct tape. I put this clarinet case inside a heavy cloth soft carry case which just fits over the clarinet case. The soft carry case cost $25.00. It has lots of pockets, zippers, velcro closures, and plenty of room for "stuff". This way the clarinet case is completely protected and I don't worry about it falling apart on me. The carry case even has room for some music, another zipper case inside for reeds, room for cork grease, pencils, a tablet, business cards, what have you. I don't plan to make any changes in the near future. The original clarinet case was beautifully made with red plushy material, and looks brand new inside, but the outside is pretty dinged up. No matter. Nobody sees the outside of it now anyway. I am into cheap fixes and this really worked for me.

How can you not love the 60's Buffet single cases with the inside ribbon emblazoned:

"The Sweetest Clarinet Ever Made"

It always made me smile, every time I'd open the case...GBK

Take a look at the new Cargo Cases from Selmer. You can customize them to your needs!

Ah, the quest for the perfect case. After being involved in this matter for many years I am a firm believer in the "case in back pack" school. If you simply put whatever case you choose in a conventional backpack it solves many problems. And if you do then the case the clarinet is housed in can be of minimal size. Put extra accessories including barrels, mps etc in a small separate cosmetic type travel case and music, stand etc goes in the backpack proper. The backpack also frees-up both arms/hands for whatever during transport.

my protec double case is very good and ive never had any problems with it, so im guessing that the single cases are built to the same quality, plus they have those big pockets to store stuff in. its a really great case.

i have the bam x-light case and the bam trekking case. the x-light case is really cool looking (every one says it looks like a rocket ship, not like a case at all), but it bends the side keys (at least it did on my horn). It was kind of expensive too...The trekking case came w/ my leblanc horn, and its a really great case. It offers a lot of protection and a lot of room to store things if you need it. BAM makes really high quality cases, and i would strongly reccomend them if you are willing to pay a little bit more.

I second the Bam vote if you can afford it. I've used them for years and really love them. When I travel I can stick it into my carry-on bag. Protec cases are a good second choice. They last a long time.

The '60s Buffet pochette cases were great. I really liked the fact they had space for 2 barrels. Plus they had a cutout in the center that fit the
Cordier reed clippers perfectly. I really wish they would re-introduce this style.

The rectangular cut out in the center was actually for the plastic Buffet reed case (black bottom, clear snap-on lid) which held 4 reeds...GBK
