 Baffled by a Lyre

When I purchased my Selmer 9*, it came with a bunch of different things in the case, including a lyre. The lyre has the Selmer Paris logo on it and apprears to be fairly old. Now, the problem is that my horn has an articulated G#/C#, and I have been wondering ever since where on earth you would put a lyre on this instrument. It obviously cannot be attached to the midsection, where my lyre would go on my marching horn, is too small to go on the bell, and is uncomfortably close to my face and doesn't fit right if I try to put it on the barrel. It just baffles me as to why the horn would come with a lyre if there is nowhere on the horn to put it. I would never use this horn for marching, but it would be nice to have for pep band situations. Any thoughts?

Hi, BCG :)

Lyres are made to fit one or the other, mid joint or bell joint. Can you go back where you purchased the instrument and ask to exchange the lyre for one that fits the bell? My guess is that whoever put the lyre with the instrument didn't try it first: a simple oversight. If it's too much hassle to exchange it or you can't swap it for some reason, last time I looked they weren't terribly expensive.

It's amazing what one finds in cases of purchased used horns. Sometimes, it seems, the seller just wants to get rid of something he had laying around.
I have one lyre that came with an ancient horn that has double 90deg bends in it that would allow it to be placed on a barrel joint and still be comfortably readable. Perhaps you will include it with a horn you sell someday and baffle yet another owner.
