 40's songs
Author: Wyatt

What grouping would you use for songs such as "As Time Goes By", or "Carolina in the Morning" or "Stormy Weather"? I can ear-play them in the keys of C or G or F, but those aren't necessarily where they're played in the real world ensemble. Does anyone know where I could find a collection of those sort of songs?

There are several fake books on the market. Various booksellers such as B & N and Amazon have them

Most musicians I know refer to the songs of the 30s and 40s as the "old standards". Most fake books have these in them for quick reference but don't always have the dynamics or punctuations. You might try something labeled "Songs of the Forties", "40s Greatest Hits" or something like that to get the complete notation, etc.

I have several old title-composer- type listings of 30-50's songs which show playable [ original ?] piano keys for Stormy Weather Ab, As Time Goes by Eb, [rent "Casablanca" to see Hoagy C], Carolina C and others. When I ran a combo I had my listings which were familiar and easily playable, {F, Bb,Eb,Ab} on Bb and Eb horns. Stardust , good old Db, better known as "in 5" . The fake books mentioned prob. will have the original keys! Hope this helps, Don

I don't believe the piano player in Casablanca was Hoagy. Maybe you're thinking of "To Have or Have Not" with Bogie and Lauren Bacall. Hoagy did a cameo performance in that one. Did he also accompany Ms. Bacall in a casino scene in "The Big Sleep"? "Ever been bitten by a dead bee?"

Here are two publications:
1. The Essential Club Date Collection, published by WARNER BROS. PUBLICATIONS, which contains over 125 songs.
2.the Definitive Jazz Collection, published by Hal Leonard Corporation, which contains 95 songs.
Best of luck, Wes

I asked our church organist/pianist/oboist/vocalist [!!!] who sang Stormy W [torchy!] at our Valentine's party about key. She sang it in C to accommodate her vocal range, but obviously could have put it anywhere! Don
